A guide to common engineering terms defined.
As-Built Documentation - Collection of paper drawings or electronic drawings that typically reside in the contractor’s onsite trailer that contain mark-ups, annotations, and comments about changes that have been made to the contract documents during the construction phase
AutoCAD – commercial computer-aided design and drafting software application
Certified Energy Auditing – An inspection survey and an analysis of energy flows for energy conservation in a building that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment
Civil Engineering – discipline that deals with design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment
Commissioning – is the process of planning, documenting, scheduling, testing, adjusting, verifying, and training, to provide a facility that operates as a fully functional system
Commissioning and Startup – the transitional phase between plant construction completion and commercial operations. It encompasses all activities that bridge these two phases including systems turnover, checkout of systems, commissioning of systems, introduction of feedstock, and performance testing
Control and Instrumentation Engineer – are responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing and maintaining equipment which is used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery and processes
Control Engineering – related to electrical, electronic, and computer engineering. Control Engineers design and oversee the production of systems and equipment, researches and tests and quality checks any function related to the project or system.
Control Panel – is a flat surface area which has controlling or monitoring devices. Control panels are used in many places to control and monitor machine
Design and Drafting –Design and drafting engineers prepare mechanical or digital drawings, diagrams or blueprints and/or models of various products or structures to guide product makers, architects or construction personnel in the manufacture, implementation or building process
Document Control –Manage client documents while ensuring their accuracy, quality and integrity
DOT – (Department of Transportation )Electrical, Instrumentation & Mechanical Personnel – Records and documentation demonstrating CTG employees are qualified and licensed to operate commercial vehicles, electrical, instrumentation and mechanical machinery
Electrical and Instrumentation Field Support – Measure physical qualities temperature, pressure, flow, etc
Electrical Power Distribution– is the final stage in the delivery of electric power; it carries electricity from the transmission system to individual consumers. Commercial and residential customers are connected to the secondary distribution lines through service drops
Instrumentation Structures - Assemble structural and mechanical parts of instrument. Read and interpret drawings and blueprints
Mechanical Field Support – Analyze, design, manufacture, maintenance of mechanical systems. It involves the production and usage of heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation of machines and tools
Pre-Commissioning- Verification of functional operability of elements within the system to achieve a state of readiness for the Commissioning and Start-up operation
Procedure and Turn Over Development – Physical completion of the construction project and transfer of knowledge in the form of documentation
Project Coordination – Managing the day-to-day operations of a project, making sure the resources are aware of deadlines and tasks that they are responsible, managing meeting minutes, and so on
Safety Support – Identify, evaluate and control hazards in products, machines, equipment and/or facilities that control a potential to cause to people or damage to property
Start-up Oversight – Oversee all the project and system details prior to production start
Supplier Verification and Factory Audits – On-site verification activity of a process or quality system, to ensure compliance with requirements
Temporary Power Distribution Structures - Provide and distribute power from temporary power poles or jobsite generators
UL 508A - UL 508A certification is an industrial control panel directive, which is sought by electrical inspectors. The UL 508A Listing Mark on an industrial control panel provides evidence of third party certification to the municipal inspection authority and to the purchaser of the panel
Utility Inspector – is assigned to various phases of the supervision of drainage and all other wet and dry utilities works and other utilities with an important part in assuring the quality of work in the finished project
Welding Inspector – to provide a record of the welding variables used and the inspection results obtained during the procedure qualification test
